Doing things alone can be scary. Has there ever been an event or activity you didn’t do because you didn’t want to go alone? I’ve found that over the years, it has become a lot easier to do things by myself (most of the time) after the first few times. It’s easy to feel “lame” in the beginning, but there is something exciting about being independent in ways you weren’t familiar with before.
Here are a few ideas of things you can do if you want some alone time or just feel like trying something new:
Read or write at a coffee shop
A great introductory alone activity and excuse to try a new coffee shop. It’s also a way to “become a local” once you’ve found your favorite spots and keep showing up consistently.
Go to a museum
I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) by myself last year, and the best part was that I went at my own pace and read everything I wanted to, without being tied to someone else’s speed. It was 3 hours of the most relaxing time.
Walk in the park
See what pretty parks there are around you and listen to your favorite podcast or book. Be sure to be safe and go where there are others around or during the day. My personal favorites are spots by open water.
Explore local thrift stores and shops
A classic activity for one, exploring local shops and stores will always be a sure fire way to get to know a new area (and maybe a new outfit). Other unique stores would be a record shop, home decor, etc.
Take a new workout class
Getting bored of just walking or running outside? The best part about trying a new workout class is that many of them offer very cheap first classes for only $5 or $10, and it’s a good way to mix up a routine.
Plant some new flowers
I’ve finally began to understand the appeal of plants and the simple joy they can bring. If I had more room in my apartment, I would definitely make an event about going to local plant stores and finding cute little planters or pots.
Go to a concert
This one was definitely scary for me at first, but when I was able to see one of my favorite bands in the front row, it made it all worth it. I would even be open to seeing an act that I don’t know too much about just for the heck of it.
Visit a local farmers market
I used to go to arts and craft shows with my mom all the time when I was younger, and going to farmer’s markets brings back those memories. There is something about those dry soup packets and jarred preserves. I love leaving with some local produce or baked goods that are unique and beautiful.
Finally eat at the dessert place you’ve meaning to try
Have some time during lunch or over the weekend? Go out and eat something new and sweet. I love venturing on the weekdays during lunch when the lines are always much shorter at the current “trendy” spot.
Try a jewelry making class (or other craft)
I once took a food styling class and had so much fun eating and taking pictures of scones. From there, I met someone who I connected to some old roommates of mine when they were looking for a place to live in NYC. The world is always so small. One big tip is that many local libraries will put on free classes as well!
Find a pick up sports team or league
I am happy to report that the beginning of my pickleball journey was started after showing up to the park to play with strangers. Now I play multiple times a week and am always playing with new people. Many spots offer social or more competitive leagues that can make you feel like you’re on your high school sports team again.
Eat any meal in a restaurant
For some reason, this one was hard for me as I thought eating in a restaurant alone was much different from a morning cafe. After the first few minutes it was just like any normal meal, and I may accidentally eavesdrop from time to time.
Play with cats at a cat cafe
Need a cat fix? Check out a cat cafe and see how the animals are. I am waiting for the day when I finally get a cat…but this’ll do for now.
Try different volunteering opportunities
I have no doubt that every city has a variety of volunteer opportunities that are looking for new people. From maintaining local parks, packing meals, or any cause you’re passionate about, it’s an opportunity to meet others with similar interests! If you’re based in NYC, New York Cares is a great place to start.
It can still be nerve racking going to things along, but very rarely have I encountered rude people. The best part is that they have all been strangers, so I have never seen them again. Doing things alone is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and learn more about yourself and what you like to do. Some of these activities I’ve kept on doing since I liked them so much, and I’m very thankful that I tried them.
